What are the rules on buying engagement rings? There are no rules!

We constantly get asked what customers ‘should’ be spending and what stones or styles are acceptable. The main thing to bear in mind when buying a surprise ring is that your partner is going to need to love it enough to wear for a very, very long time!

We don’t go with tradition because we don’t have traditional customers. Catalogue solitaires are not our thing (although if thats what you want we can sure find one for you!). Following many informal chats with our clients, we know that the most popular styles are those that will go the distance aesthetically as well as how well they perform over the years.

If you’re already a customer of The Wearer then my advice is classic with a twist!

Its easy to get a bit lost with all the choice but you can’t go far wrong with a diamond. These days you have the option of natural or synthetic (by all intents and purposes this is still a real diamond, it’s just grown in a lab rather than dug up from the earth)*

Our most popular styles are still diamond set. Don’t forget though, Diamonds come in different forms. Consider a salt and pepper diamond which can be set with white diamonds to reveal its beauty. Or how about a cognac diamond in a textured gold band? If you have the idea we can re-create it for you. We make bespoke rings too.

There’s no hard and fast rule with metal either. We would suggest 18ct gold (you could go yellow, white or even rose gold) because its hard enough to work with and has the best durability for many years of wear. Of course, like everything else, gold is very expensive right now. If you’re on a budget you might want to consider 14ct or 9ct. (You can always upgrade a few years down the line when you’re a multi-millionaire.)

What if you don’t get it right first time?! Don’t worry. Its happened! Size is always a tricky one and generally we can re-size most rings no problem If you can borrow a ring from your other half make a note of which finger they normally wear it on and we can make an educated guess.

Most rings are made to order and lead times are anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks so bear that in mind! We have been known to create a bespoke ring from a conversation in store to the birthday in less than a week (but don’t count on that!). If time is limited the best thing you can do is buy one of our stock rings which can be brought back and amended for size or even swapped for something totally different.

We’re here in store for an informal yet knowledgeable chat to help you make that final choice.

In the meantime these are our most popular diamond ring styles so far. Which is the one for you?!

*Ethical diamonds? The debate around diamonds and ethics is a huge one, but be safe in the knowledge that all our diamonds come from renowned suppliers who follow the Kimberly Process. If you want to know more, get in touch…
